The JEOL JXA 8600 Superprobe in the UGA Department of Geology Microprobe Lab. The sample chamber, column of electron optics, and spectrometers are the part at left and are the instrument itself. The central console controls the electron beam and the imaging screen at the left side of the console. The computer at right controls the instrument's analytical functions. The purpose of the probe is to generate chemical analyses of very small (<10 micron) areas of solids. The collection of toys atop the console and elsewhere suggests that the excitement of science does not always overcome the tedium of repeated analyses on the microprobe.
The microprobe is supervised by Laboratory Coordinator Christopher J. Fleisher.
