We're standing within the walls of Rattenberg's castle, admiring the castle tower. The castle was built in the 11th century to defend Bavaria's southern borders, but today it's well within Austria. Rattenberg occupies such a narrow piece of land between the Inn and the uplands to the south that the main east-west Inn Valley rail line goes through a tunnel directly under these ruins.
