GEOL 4320/6320 Exercise 4: Reconnaissance of Schroederia Tract 1

The Ministry of Energy of the nation of Schroederia has invited Bulldawg Petroleum to examine a tract for possible petroleum exploration. A simple map shows the setting of the tract, and a base map shows the coordinate system used in the tract. As a geologist for Bulldawg Petroleum, your first objective is a reconnaissance to get a general understanding of the tract and its potential. Specifically, you are to

1) Make a cross section from Well 323.3-66.3 to Well 355.3-90.1,
      using the eleven logs along that line;
      tracing at least the horizons marked on the log for Well 339.1-77.8,
      and tracing those horizons, using the colors shown on that log.

Making this cross-section on an 8.5 x 11-inch sheet of paper yields a useless result. You will need to join multiple sheets of paper for the backing for your cross-section (if you work completely on paper) or you will need to print your computer-generated cross-section on multiple sheets of paper and join them together (if you work electronically and then print out the result for submission).

2) Make a structure map of the top of Interval M;

3) Make an isopach map of Interval H (from Top H to Top M).

4) Write a piece of text of no more than 300 words describing this area and its petroleum potential.  Your statement should be written as a short statement or report (not a letter) that could be submitted to Bulldawg Petroleum management or to geologically literate persons outside the company.  You are encouraged to see Railsback's web pages on scientific editing (very relevant to this writing assignment) and scientific writing (where only the sections on abstracts would be relevant to this assignment of a short piece of text).

As we move into a more geologically realistic exercise, you may find it useful to look at the figures of Bjørlykke's Chapter 12 to see some of the structural styles shown there.

This exercise will be due on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 3:30:00 pm. Late exercises are deducted 20% for each calendar day late or part thereof.
