Like most academics, I receive requests via email from editors, publishers, and the general public for unpaid labor, commonly in the form of reviewing.  These requests come in three general forms, each of which receives a different response:

1) Requests actually generated by the person making the request.  I generally respond as soon as I receive the message.

2) Computer-generated requests instructing me to respond to a website, with instructions on how to log onto that website, passwords to use, browsers to use or not use, system software to use or not use, etc.  I generally set these aside until time becomes available to do the work requested, because I don't want to waste time logging in, logging out, etc.  I may, however, lose track of the message and never do the work requested.

3) Computer-generated requests like those of Type 2, but with an additional instruction along the lines of "Do not reply to this message by email".  I generally assure my compliance by deleting the message immediately.
